A Civil Disagreement

Editorial Overview

What are we all about? Consider this the anti-blog. In the political realm, the internet has news sites, Op/Ed pieces, and bloggers — lots and lots of bloggers. Please don't misunderstand we are all for blogging — anything that allows people to be heard. People look to these sites for information and for points-of-view but these vehicles most often depend on provocation, partisan bickering, and inflammatory dialogue — not reason. We believe there is something missing: a place where regular people, us normal folks, can go to read and/or contribute well-thought-out opinions on politics in the world that we live in.

We focus our discussion by concentrating on a new political question each month. This question will be approached from one of three points-of-view: liberal, conservative, and alternative. The debate between liberal and conservative stands has been THE single great controversy in modern times. Entering this big debate between liberals and conservatives, the purpose of this site is to clarify the arguments, and look at the issues as they affect us all. We added the alternative opinion to provide a good-faith hearing for those who seek to challenge the liberal-conservative dominance. Sometimes, we will offer a libertarian viewpoint, other times a socialist viewpoint, still other times a green viewpoint or a 'third way' viewpoint — always a different tack.

This is a screened site. We will weed out the obscenities, the shrill voices, the politics-for-the-sake-of-politics wonks, the spin doctors, the agenda people, and the politicians themselves. We do not screen submitted opinions in order to push an agenda.

We screen submittals to provide viewpoints that are:

  • To the point.
  • Expressed in positive terms. We don't belittle the beliefs of anyone, we don't name-call, and we don't disrespect. We insist on civil debate.
  • Focused on political thought, not personalities.

We are not:

  • Investigative. We don't dig up dirt.
  • Provocative. We don't go after people, ambush people, or look for gaffes.
  • Trendy. We avoid the urge to cover the news story of the day.
  • Beholden to any interest group or financial entity.

We will elevate the discussion. We are obligated to reason alone. We will choose articles by regular people who have given politics serious thought. We are dedicated to the idea that John and Jane Q. Citizen have something important to say. In fact, that is our mission.

We give readers the opportunity to respond in a thoughtful way to the opinions presented here. The opinions presented here will be those of Jane or John Q. Citizen; the only required credentials are that the submitted opinions are respectful and thoughtful.

We hope you enjoy politics from THIS vantage point. We hope that this is a testament to the idea that We The People have something of value to add, and that political thought is not the monopoly of operatives and professional political hacks.
